Conventional or Though Hole (TH) assembly is still just as much a part of electronics as it was 30 years ago. Admittedly, not in the same scale or volume with the amount of SMD used in modern electronics, but most of your assemblies will still need power devices and interconnect.

In our TH department we utilise a light guided crop and clinch machines for TH heavy boards which helps to improve accuracy and efficiency of component insertion ready for selective soldering.
